History
The Canaan Dog is a breed of pariah dog that originated in the Middle East. The breed is named after the Biblical land of Canaan, and is sometimes also called the Palestinian Pariah Dog or Israeli Pariah Dog. The Canaan Dog is one of the oldest known breeds of domestic dog, and is thought to be descended from the ancient Egyptian Basenji-type dogs.
The Canaan Dog was once common throughout the Middle East, but by the mid-20th century, the breed was on the brink of extinction. In an effort to save the breed, a few dedicated breeders began to selectively bred Canaan Dogs and promote them as working dogs and companion animals. The breed slowly began to regain popularity, and today there are an estimated 1,000-2,000 Canaan Dogs worldwide.
The exact ancestry of the Canaan Dog is unknown, but they are thought to be descended from ancient Egyptian Basenji-type dogs. The first recorded mention of a dog resembling a Canaan Dog was made by an English traveler in 1858, who described them as "pariah" or wild dogs that roamed the streets of Cairo, Egypt. In 1932, a German zoologist named Dr. Rudolphina Menzel visited Palestine and observed a number of these pariah dogs. She was so impressed with their intelligence and loyalty that she decided to bring some back to Germany with her for further study.
In 1935, Menzel founded the first official kennel club for Canaan Dogs in Germany. After World War II ended, many German soldiers who had been stationed in Palestine returned home with Canaan Dogs as pets. This helped to spread awareness of the breed outside of Israel and Palestine, and by the 1970s there were small numbers of Canaan Dogs living in Europe and North America.
The Canaan Dog is still relatively rare compared to other dog breeds, but their popularity has been slowly increasing in recent years. They make excellent working dogs and loyal companions, and are now recognized by major kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club (AKC) and United Kennel Club (UKC).
