The Cantabrian Water Dog is a breed of dog that is native to the Cantabria region of Spain. The breed is also known as the Perro de Agua Cantabrico, the Perro de Agua Español, and the Spanish Water Dog. The Cantabrian Water Dog is a descendant of the ancient Iberian water dog. The breed was used by fishermen in the Cantabria region to help with fishing tasks such as herding fish into nets and retrieving lost tackle. The breed nearly became extinct in the early 20th century due to a decline in the fishing industry and competition from other breeds of dogs. The Cantabrian Water Dog was saved from extinction by a breeder named Antonio García Pérez who began a breeding program in the 1970s. The breed has since become popular in Spain and other European countries. The Cantabrian Water Dog was recognized as a breed by the Spanish Kennel Club in 1984 and by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 2006.
