History

The Cao de Castro Laboreiro is a large breed of dog that is native to the mountainous region of northwestern Portugal. The breed is named after the town of Castro Laboreiro, where it was first developed. The Cao de Castro Laboreiro is a descendant of the ancient Molosser dogs that were brought to Portugal by the Phoenicians. These dogs were used for hunting and guarding, and they eventually became the ancestors of many modern breeds, including the Rottweiler, Mastiff, and Great Dane.

The Cao de Castro Laboreiro was once a very popular breed in Portugal, but its numbers dwindled during the 20th century. This was due to a number of factors, including World War I and II, which led to a decrease in the demand for hunting dogs. In addition, many rural Portuguese families could no longer afford to keep large dogs as pets. As a result, the Cao de Castro Laboreiro became increasingly rare, and by the 1970s it was considered to be on the brink of extinction.

Fortunately, efforts were made to save the breed from extinction, and today it is once again becoming popular in Portugal and other countries. The Cao de Castro Laboreiro is now recognized by several kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club. The breed is still relatively rare outside of its native country, but it is slowly gaining popularity as more people learn about its unique history and characteristics.
