History

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a breed of dog that originated in the United States. The breed is named after the Catahoula Parish in Louisiana, where it is thought to have originated. The Catahoula Leopard Dog is also sometimes called the Catahoula Cur, Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, or simply the Catahoula.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is thought to be a descendant of the French Mastiff and other herding dogs brought to Louisiana by settlers in the 1600s. The breed was used for hunting and herding cattle and hogs. By the early 1900s, the Catahoula Leopard Dog was almost extinct due to crossbreeding with other breeds of dogs.

In 1979, the Louisiana Legislature recognized the Catahoula Leopard Dog as the state dog of Louisiana. In 1981, the United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized the breed. Since then, the popularity of the Catahoula Leopard Dog has grown steadily.

The ancestry of the Catahoula Leopard Dog is unknown for certain, but it is thought to be a mix of several different breeds of dogs brought to Louisiana by settlers in the 1600s. These breeds include the French Mastiff, Greyhound, Bloodhound, and Beauceron. The Catahoula Leopard Dog was first recognized as a distinct breed by the UKC in 1981.
