History
The Keeshond is a German spitz breed of dog that was once very popular in the Netherlands. The breed was nearly extinct after World War II, but has since been revived and is now popular again. The Keeshond is a descendant of the German spitz, and was recognized as a separate breed in the early 1800s. The breed gets its name from Cornelis (Kees) de Gijselaar, who was a leader of the Patriot Party during the Dutch Revolution of 1795. The Keeshond became the official symbol of the party, and was later adopted as the national dog of the Netherlands.
The Keeshond is a medium-sized dog with a thick, double coat that is typically gray and black with a cream-colored ruff. The breed is known for its friendly and outgoing personality, and makes an excellent companion dog.
