History

The Shih-Poo is a designer dog breed that is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The Shih-Poo is recognized by the American Kennel Club as a Toy Group dog. The Toy Group consists of small dogs that weigh less than 20 pounds and stand no taller than 12 inches at the shoulder. The Shih-Poo breed almost became extinct, but has since become popular again.

The history of the Shih-Poo dog begins with its ancestors, the Shih Tzu and the Poodle. The Shih Tzu is an ancient Chinese breed that was developed over 2,000 years ago. The Poodle is also an ancient breed, but originated in Germany. The Poodle was originally bred to be a hunting dog, but was later bred down in size to become a companion dog.

The first recorded cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle was in the 1950s in the United States. This cross was likely done to create a smaller version of the already popular Poodle breed. However, it is not known for sure why this particular cross was done.

The resulting puppies from this cross were called "Shi-poos", "Shoodles", or "Shi-doodles". These names were likely given to them because of their similarity to both the Shih Tzu and the Poodle breeds. However, they were not yet recognized as their own distinct breed.

In the 1980s, there was another wave of popularity for these little dogs and their popularity has continued to grow since then. In 2006, the American Kennel Club officially recognized them as their own distinct breed and gave them the name "Shih-Poo".

The Ancestry of the Shih-Poo dog is 50% Shih Tzu and 50% Toy or Miniature Poodle. From where Shih-Poo dog recognized as a breed? They are recognized by most major kennel clubs including the American Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and more!
