The Nebelung cat is a long-haired variety of the domestic shorthair. It is characterized by its blue-gray coloration and green eyes. The breed was developed in the United States from a single cat named Wolff.
Wolff was a black domestic shorthair with a mutation that resulted in his blue-gray coloration. He was born in 1984 and was obtained by Cora Cobb, who began breeding him with other black cats in an attempt to create more of his unique coloration.
Eventually, Cobb decided to register the new breed with The International Cat Association (TICA) under the name "Nebelung", which means "creature of the mist" or "shadow dragon" in German. The breed was officially recognized by TICA in 1987.
Since then, Nebelung cats have become increasingly popular, although they are still quite rare. They are known for their gentle dispositions and loyalty to their owners. Unfortunately, the Nebelung breed almost became extinct due to a lack of interest from breeders; however, fortunately, there has been a recent resurgence in popularity and they are now being bred more frequently.
