The American Bulldog is a descendant of the Old English Bulldog, which was brought to America by British settlers in the 1600s. The Old English Bulldog was used for bull-baiting, a cruel sport in which bulls were chained to a post and attacked by dogs. This sport was eventually outlawed in England, but it continued in America until the early 1800s.
By this time, the American Bulldog had become a different breed than its English ancestor. It was larger and more aggressive, and was used for bear-baiting, hog-catching, and as a guard dog. When bear-baiting and hog-catching were outlawed in America, the American Bulldog nearly became extinct.
However, some fanciers of the breed decided to keep it alive. They bred American Bulldogs for strength and aggression, rather than for size or appearance. This helped to keep the breed from becoming extinct, but also made it less popular with the general public.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence in popularity for the American Bulldog. This is due in part to their use as working dogs on farms and ranches, as well as their reputation as loyal and protective family pets.
