Few animals have touched global hearts the way Punch, the tiny Japanese macaque from Ichikawa City Zoo, has. First known for clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy after being rejected by his mother shortly after birth, Punch became a viral symbol of resilience, vulnerability, and unexpected strength. And once again, he is in the center of online attention.
A New Viral Clip Sparks Widespread Concern

Recently, a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed an adult macaque dragging Punch across the ground. The footage crossed 1.2 million views, quickly alarming fans who’ve followed the little monkey’s journey since his emotional rise to fame.
In response to public worry, the zoo issued a detailed statement on February 20 explaining exactly what happened — and assuring everyone that Punch is safe.
What Actually Happened in the Video?
Caretakers explained that Punch approached another infant monkey hoping to socialize. When the other baby avoided him, Punch simply sat down nearby.
An adult female macaque — believed to be the other baby’s mother — then stepped in.
According to the zoo:
“The adult monkey that dragged Punch is probably the mother of the monkey with whom Punch tried to communicate. She likely felt her baby was annoyed and got upset.”
Experts described this as normal troop discipline, something young macaques commonly experience.
The zoo added:
“Punch has been scolded by other monkeys many times in the past and has learned how to socialize with them. No monkey has ever shown serious aggression toward him.”

Running Back to His Plush Toy — His Famous Comfort Object
The video also shows Punch running straight to his stuffed orangutan toy — the same plush that made him famous worldwide. This toy was originally given to him for emotional support after his mother rejected him at birth in July 2025.
But caretakers clarified this behavior is completely normal.
“He left the stuffed toy after a short while and resumed communicating with other monkeys.”
They also confirmed that Punch behaved normally throughout the rest of the day, including during feeding times.
Expected Challenges in Social Integration
While many viewers thought the incident was bullying, the zoo emphasized that this type of correction is expected during troop integration — especially for an orphaned or rejected baby learning how to live inside an established social hierarchy.
“We anticipated that these kinds of challenges may arise,” the zoo explained.
They also stressed Punch’s emotional strength:
“While Punch is scolded, he shows resilience and mental strength. Support his effort rather than feel sorry for him.”

From Rejection to Worldwide Love
Punch’s emotional journey started when his mother rejected him shortly after birth. Struggling to connect with other monkeys, he formed a powerful bond with the stuffed orangutan toy — always hugging it, carrying it, and sleeping beside it.
These videos melted hearts across the world, turning Punch into a global sensation. Since then, the zoo has provided periodic updates showing gradual improvements in his social skills and confidence.
Still Learning, Still Growing
For the millions who love him, this latest viral moment is just one small step in Punch’s long journey.
The caretakers’ message is clear:
Punch is safe. He is learning. He is growing. And he is moving forward — one interaction at a time.
